FAQ

Answers to a few common questions. As always, this is general information, not medical advice — bring your specific questions to your care team.

Can eating blueberries prevent or cure breast cancer?

No. No food can prevent or cure cancer. Blueberries contain antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds that are associated with general health benefits in research, but they are not a treatment, and eating them is not a substitute for screening, medical care, or your treatment plan.

How many blueberries should I eat?

There’s no official “dose” of blueberries for cancer prevention or support. General dietary guidance encourages a variety of fruits and vegetables as part of an overall healthy eating pattern. If you have questions about how blueberries fit into your specific diet — especially during treatment — a registered dietitian can help you figure out what’s right for you.

Can food replace my treatment plan?

No. Diet can be a supportive part of your overall care, but it does not replace medical treatment such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or hormone therapy. Never stop, delay, or change a treatment based on dietary information without talking to your oncologist first.

Where does the information on this site come from?

We link to specific, publicly available sources from government health agencies, major hospital systems, and peer-reviewed research for every claim we make. You can see the full list, organized by topic, on our Sources & Further Reading page.

I’m having trouble eating during treatment — what should I do?

Talk to your care team as soon as possible, especially if you’re losing weight without trying or unable to keep food down for more than a day or two. Many cancer centers have oncology dietitians who specialize in exactly this. See our Nutrition During Treatment page for general tips in the meantime.
